Data protection, roles, and permissions

As a Moodle-based platform atingi offers a wide range of functions that are customized around the core features of Moodle. The role concept is an essential part of every learning management system because it specifies the permissions of a user in a pre-defined (course) context. As a general example for the fulfilment of different roles, one can think of a teacher, who can give materials to their students, divide them into groups or hand out certificates, while the learners do not have such permissions in the course context.

The digital learning platform atingi consists of three operating levels: the System Level, Category Level and Course Level. On the level of managing course categories Category Managers can be supported by the Category Assistants in managing courses. On a course level the Course Manager overviews all the activities within a course that can be edited by the Course Content Developer. The Course Instructor serves as a support to manage learners in different types of activities.

To ensure information security only very few users are dealing with sensitive user data as Category Managers with the User Data Viewer add-on. This complies with the principle of least privilege, which allows users only enough access to perform a required job and thereby reduces the risk of attackers gaining access to critical systems or sensitive data. Persons with the role of Category Manager with the User Data Viewer add-on will have to meet certain pre-conditions including proven knowledge of data protection requirements.

To protect the data of our users, we have additionally integrated an identity manager (Keycloak), which makes it harder for attackers to gain access to sensitive user data.
