At atingi, we actively encourage the re-use of existing courses to increase efficiency and support sustainability. Creating high-quality learning content takes time and resources, and re-using courses helps make the most of that effort. In development cooperation especially, it is important that learning content can be used beyond the duration of a single project. Re-using and adapting existing courses allows valuable knowledge to stay available over time and to be tailored to new contexts, audiences, or regions. This makes learning offers more sustainable and impactful.
Re-usable courses that are created with open-source tools and openly licensed content are clearly marked and visible in the course overview for our partners. This makes it easy to find suitable courses and build on existing work instead of starting from scratch.
Re-using courses also helps:
- Save time and development costs
- Ensure consistent quality across learning offers
- Encourage collaboration and knowledge sharing between partners
- Reduce duplication of similar content
By re-using courses, you contribute to a more sustainable, collaborative, and efficient learning ecosystem.
What to Keep in Mind – Guidelines for re-using courses
Licensing: Before re-using an existing course, always check the applicable Creative Commons (CC) license. Each CC license defines specific conditions for how a course may be used, adapted, and shared. Most courses require attribution of the original author. This applies to all licenses that include “BY”. When attribution is required, you must clearly name the original author in the course description. Complying with CC license requirements is essential for legal reasons. Proper attribution and correct use of licensed content help prevent violations of copyright or intellectual property law and ensure that content is reused in a lawful and fair manner.
Costs and Course Publication: If you re-use a course on atingi for your own target group or adapt it to your specific needs, this is considered a new course publication. As a result:
- it may have pricing implications, or
- it will count as one of the course publications included in your purchased package.
Quality Assurance (QA): Once you have completed your course adaptations, the atingi team will conduct a quality assurance (QA) check based on the publication option you selected. For the most up-to-date QA requirements, please refer to the latest QA checklist. Please note:
- Any AI-generated content must be clearly marked as such.
- All externally created content must be properly cited to comply with intellectual property laws.
Public Course Publication: Courses cannot be duplicated in the public course overview on atingi. If you re-use a course with no or only very limited adaptations, you may publish it only as an open-link or private course, not as a public course.
